Powder – 5 years later
In October of 2019, I posted a blog entry about Powder and her ruptured uterus. Powder’s story had a happy ending and all the puppies flourished. But Powder’s story didn’t end there! After her spay, Powder has stayed with us. She belongs to my youngest daughter, Kathryn. Kathryn is the one who has clicker trained puppies for me for years and who also handles general care with the puppies. Everybody who meets Powder absolutely loves her and we have had at least a dozen people over the years offer to steal her. LOL While Powder belongs to Kathryn, she is a fuzz whore and hasn’t met a man she didn’t like. She has a very special place in our program.
Several years ago, Kathryn noticed that Powder had developed a lump. We had it checked and were told that it was a hernia but just to keep an eye on it as it didn’t seem to hurt her. Sometimes it was bigger and she’d get it rechecked, but over the years, she kept an eye on it checking firmness and size as well as Powder’s reaction to it being touched. Generally speaking, over the last several years, there hasn’t been much change. On
Christmas Day, however, Kathryn came to me wide eyed saying that her lump was hard and large and seemed to hurt her. We called the vet the next day and they got her in the following day – on a Friday afternoon.
Kathryn took Powder to the vet for her appointment and then called me shortly after to tell me that Powder needed surgery and they wanted to do it immediately. I told her to get it done. When we picked her up a few hours later, the vet came out to talk to me because she had found something she’d never quite seen before. Apparently, when her rupture surgery had been done, she had never healed properly. What resulted was a pocket. In the pocket was blood and tissue. They removed it, repaired where she hadn’t closed properly, then proceeded to check the remainder of the original incision site. What they found was a total of THREE areas that had done the same thing. The repaired all three, cut away old tissue, and sewed her back up. She healed wonderfully and we have seen no signs of any further issues.
I am so incredibly grateful that they were able to get her in as quickly as they did and were so thorough in their examination and repair. Our house just wouldn’t be the same without Powder! If you stop by to pick up a puppy, I can assure you that Powder, a young 8 now, will be right up front to greet you
